Women-Owned Businesses

There were 162,616 women-owned firms in Missouri in 2012, up from 130,772 in 2007, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2012 Survey of Business Owners. This was a 24.4% increase in the number of women-owned firms in the state. These firms accounted for more than $24 billion in sales and receipts in 2012. Approximately one-third of all businesses in Missouri are Women-owned.

In the U.S., there were nearly 9.9 million women-owned firms in 2012, up 26% from 2007. Sales and receipts from women-owned firms totaled $1.4 trillion in 2012. Women-owned firms made up just under 36% of all firms and 4.2% of all sales and receipts in the U.S.

States with the largest number of women-owned businesses were California (1,320,085), Texas (866,678), Florida (807,817), New York (725,709) and Illinois (417,500). In addition, California also had the largest gross sales from women-owned firms. Missouri ranked 20th among the states in the total number of women-owned firms.

Twenty-nine states, including Missouri, had more than 100,000 businesses owned by women. Thirteen states had more than 200,000 women-owned firms in 2012.

States with the highest percentage of women-owned businesses, as a percent of all firms, were spread throughout the United States. States with the largest percentage of women-owned businesses were the District of Columbia (42.7%), Georgia (40.5%), Maryland (39.3%), New Mexico (39.0%) and Florida (38.5 %). Missouri had one-third of all firms Women-owned firms.
