Women-Owned Businesses in Missouri Concentrated in Retail and Services

Approximately half of the more than 120,000 women-owned businesses in Missouri are in the Retail Trade, Health Care and Social Assistance, and Other Services industries, according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Business Owners. This is inline with national trends for business ownership by women. The largest percent of sales and receipts for women-owned firms in Missouri is in the Wholesale Trade sector, making up more than 26 percent of all sales and receipts for women-owned businesses.

Nearly 46 percent of Missouri firms in the Education Services industry are owned by women, while the Retail Trade, Other Services (except Public Administration) and Administrative, Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services industries each have more than 30 percent of firms owned by women.

Women own fewer than 10 percent of firms in the Construction, Forestry, Fishing and Agricultural Services, and Management of Companies and Enterprises industries.
