Turkey DinnerThe Plymouth settlers first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1621 making it a time for gathering with friends and family, giving thanks, and of course – eating! Did you know that Missouri ranks fourth in turkey production in the United States with an estimated 17.5 million birds raised this year…just one of the facts MERIC has put together for you to gobble up to commemorate this holiday.

150th Anniversay
Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to be a National Holiday on Oct 3, 1863 making this year's Thanksgiving holiday its 150th anniversary.

Estimated number of turkeys produced in the Missouri in 2011. That's talking turkey!

The number of pounds of turkeys raised in the United States in 2011. Estimated receipts for these turkey sales are forecasted to be $4.99 billion.

Missouri’s rank in turkey production in the United States for 2011 (tied with Virginia) with an estimated 17.5 million raised, yielding a total of 575 million pounds with a value of $415 million.

Minnesota
The nation’s leading turkey producer at 46.2 million, followed by North Carolina (32.0 million), Arkansas (30.5 million), and Missouri (17.5 million).
