Number of Patents Issued Continue to Rise in Missouri

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the number of patents issued increased in Missouri by 67 percent from 2008 to 2013 to total 1,301. Over nine in ten (1,184) of the 2013 patents issued in Missouri were utility patents. These patents were issued for inventions, such as a new machine, manufacture or composition of matter, or a new and useful improvement. Another 112 patents were categorized as design patents, issued for the design of visual ornamental characteristics of an article of manufacture. There were also 5 patents re-issued.

The USPTO categorizes patents into five categories: utility, design, plant, reissue, and statutory invention registrations (SIR). The most common of patents are utility patents, also known as "patents for inventions".
