Number of Patents Issued Rise in Missouri

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the number of patents issued increased in Missouri by 76.9 percent from 2009 to 2010 to total 1,140. Over eighty-five percent of last year's patents in Missouri were utility patents. These patents are issued for inventions, such as a new machine, manufacture or composition of matter, or a new and useful improvement. Another 157 patents were categorized as design patents, issued for the design of visual ornamental characteristics of an article of manufacture.

The USPTO categorizes patents into five categories: utility, design, plant, reissue, and statutory invention registrations (SIR). The most common of patents are utility patents, also known as "patents for inventions".
