Nursing Occupations in
Missouri has over 123,000 Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses
According to the Missouri State
Board of Nursing, 99,366 actively licensed Registered Nurses (RNs)
and 24,542 actively licensed Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) reside
in Missouri, totaling over 123,000.
Registered Nurses make up the largest healthcare occupation in the U.S., employing more than 2.7 million according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Registered Nurses Occupation is expected to grow almost 18 percent in Missouri, adding over 12,100 new positions to Missouri's laborforce.
The number of LPNs in the U.S. totals just over 752,000 and is projected to grow nationally by about 22 percent while the number of LPNs in Missouri is projected in increase by more than 2,100 by 2020.
Growth will occur primarily because of technological advancements; an increased emphasis on preventative care; and the large, aging baby-boomer population who will demand more healthcare services as they live longer and more active lives.
