Economic Share
County Contribution to State’s Economy

Economic Share is a measure of each county’s contribution of income, employment and population—as an averaged percentage— to the state’s economy.

In 2015, St. Louis County represented the largest share of the state’s economy at 19.3 percent. Worth county had the smallest share of the state’s economy at 0.04 percent. The map below displays each county’s economic share with darker shades signifying a greater contribution.

The metro areas are economic engines: 37.8 percent of the economic share is found in the St. Louis region with 19.3 percent of that activity coming from St. Louis County. The Kansas City region represents 22.7 percent of the economic share with 11.4 percent of that activity from Jackson County. Missouri’s Ozark region contributes 8.4 percent to total economic share with about half of that from Greene County. Boone County, in Central Missouri, represents three percent of the economic share.

County shares of the state economy have not changed significantly— less than one percentage point between 2005 and 2015. There have been slight positive and negative shifts in Missouri’s economic composition. The map below shows the percent change in county share. Counties shown in lighter shades lost economic share while counties in darker shades increased their economic share over the last ten years.

The largest positive shifts were in St. Charles County (0.57), Clay (0.40), Boone (0.33), Greene (0.28) and Platte (0.20). Twenty-six other counties also posted a positive shift. A total 84 counties were in negative territory. Although the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County hold a larger share of economic activity, they experienced the largest negative shifts over the decade: -0.24 percentage points and -0.87 percentage points, respectively.
