Missouri Ranks Above Average in Doctorates Awarded
Missouri ranks 20th nationally for the number of Science and Engineering Doctorates awarded with 489 in 2005. These types of degrees and skills are in high demand in today's knowledge-based economy.
According to the National Science Foundation, Missouri's trails only Illinois among border states for those Doctorates awarded. In 2005, there were 27,974 Science and Engineering Doctorates awarded in the U.S.
California had the most Doctorates, with 3,600. Following it were New York (2,419), Texas (1,781), Massachusetts (1,632),and Pennsylvania (1,397).

Nationally, there were 527,767 post-graduate students enrolled in science, engineering and health curriculum in 2005. Missouri’s post graduate students totaled 9,796, ranking the state 19th in the nation.
The state with the highest number of post-graduate students enrolled in science, engineering and health programs was California with 53,047 students. Other states with high enrollment were New York (46,392), Texas (36,315), Massachusetts (26,387), and Florida (25,498).
