Missouri's population is estimated to be 5,468,338, an increase of 6.4% since 1990 and 0.5% since 1998. Missouri's most populous counties continue to be concentrated around St. Louis and Kansas City, although Greene County is ranked fifth on the 1999 list. However, estimates of absolute change and percentage change show a definite population shift away from the urban cores to the surrounding suburban counties. Resort areas, such as the Lake of the Ozarks and Branson regions, and the springfield area are also seeing growth.
