Missouri's Hispanic population grew from 51,653 in 1980 to 118,592 in 2000 an unprecedented 130% increase. By contrast Missouri's total population grew by 13.8% from just over 4.9 million in 1980 to slightly less than 5.6 million in 2000.
While Missouri's total population in the 1980's increased by 200,387 (4.1%), Hispanic growth increased by 10,045 (19.4%). During the 1990's the Hispanic growth rate exploded with a increase of 92.2% compared with the total population rate of 9.3%.
Hispanic growth in the decade of the 1990's accounted for nearly 12% of the total population growth in the state.
