About Projections - Developing employment projections is a four step
process. We first gather historic industry employment to identify trends. Using these
trends and other factors we then project the industry employment two or ten years into
the future. At the same time we are collecting occupational employment within industries
which is referred to as staffing patterns. Once we have the industry projections and these
staffing patterns we obtain the occupational employment projections by applying the staffing patterns
to the base and projected year industry employment. Because we know that occupational
employment changes over time and is not static, adjustments are made to the staffing patterns
to predict future staffing needs. We also estimate the number of openings that are
expected to occur in each occupation over the projection period. There are two sources
of openings that are estimated - openings due to growth and openings due to replacement needs.
