Number of Patents Issued Rise in Missouri
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the number of patents issued increased in Missouri by 76.9 percent from 2009 to 2010 to total 1,140. Over eighty-five percent of last year's patents in Missouri were utility patents. These patents are issued for inventions, such as a new machine, manufacture or composition of matter, or a new and useful improvement. Another 157 patents were categorized as design patents, issued for the design of visual ornamental characteristics of an article of manufacture.
The USPTO categorizes patents into
five categories: utility, design, plant, reissue, and statutory
invention registrations (SIR). The most common of patents are
utility patents, also known as "patents for inventions".

Classification
From 2009 to 2010, there was an increase in the number of utility patents issued in each of the top eighteen classifications in Missouri. Many of the utility patents issued were in bioscience related classifications, including: Drug, Bio-Affecting and Body Treating Compositions; Multicellular Living Organisms; Organic Compounds; and Chemistry - Molecular and Microbiology.

State Comparison
Missouri ranked twenty-fifth nationally in the number of patents
issued in 2010 and second among its border states, trailing only
Illinois. The top five states were California (30,076), accounting
for nearly a quarter of all patents, followed by New York (8,095), Texas
(8,026), Washington (5,809) and Massachusetts (5,260).
