Military Retirees Fuel Entrepreneurial Growth in Missouri
Military
retirees are disproportionately represented among Missouri's
entrepreneurs: 15.8 percent, or 3,593 retirees, are potential
entrepreneurs (defined as individuals who receive between 25 and 50
percent of their total income from self-employment) and 12.0
percent, or 21,826, are entrepreneurs (at least 50 percent of total
income) -- compared to being just 10.7% of the state's population
overall between 20 and 65.
Military retirees here are more likely to be entrepreneurs than those in Illinois or Kansas, too. Migration analysis shows an inflow of entrepreneurs into the Show-Me State from Illinois and Kansas; their businesses were most likely to be construction, real estate or trucking/ transportation.
