St. Louis County had the highest per capita income in Missouri in 2006, according to recently released data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The county’s per capita income of $49,727 was almost $17,000 higher than the state average of $32,789. Thirty counties in Missouri had per capita incomes of $27,000 or higher. DeKalb County, at $18,625, had the lowest per capita income. Nine counties in Missouri had per capita incomes below $21,000.


Missouri's per capita income rose by 4.3 percent from $31,426 in 2005 to $32,789 in 2006. The largest increase was in Knox County at 12.8 percent, with an increase of $2,800 in per capita income. Per capita income had a moderate increase in all Missouri counties from 2005 to 2006 with two counties having an increase of 10 percent or higher. Both Shannon and Douglas counties had the slowest increase at 0.3 percent.

Counties with the greatest increases in per capita income were primarily in northern Missouri where large increases in farm income boosted many of the counties’ total personal income growth.
