Taxable Sales Data Series

Regional Taxable Sales
1990, 1995 and 2000

The regional distribution of taxable sales in Missouri has remained relatively unchanged in the past ten years. From 1990 to 2000, total taxable sales in Missouri increased 25 percent, but the regional allocation of the total remained relatively constant. The St. Louis Metropolitan, Kansas City Metropolitan, and Springfield regions accounted for the majority of taxable sales in Missouri, totaling just over 70 percent.

For most, variance in a region's share of Missouri's taxable sales between 1990, 1995 and 2000 has been less than one percent. The Springfield and St. Louis regions are exceptions. In 1990, the St. Louis region accounted for 42.6 percent of Missouri's taxable sales and Springfield 7.8 percent. By 2000, 40.3 percent of taxable sales were from St. Louis and 9.5 percent from the Springfield region, over-the-decade differences of 2.3 percent and 1.7 percent respectively.

Therefore, from 1990 to 2000, there was an overall declining trend in the St. Louis Metropolitan region's share of Missouri's taxable sales. The decline was coupled with an increasing share in the Springfield region. The shift may be partially explained by the increase of tourist attractions in the Springfield and Branson areas. Kansas City also increased its share of the total in the late 1990's.
