Missouri's New Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas

Following each decennial census, metropolitan areas are designated, based largely on population and commuting data from the census.  New standards may also be introduced at this time

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget have just implemented significant changes.  New concepts and new data have been introduced, resulting in a completely changed list of "Core-Based Statistical Areas" (CBSAs).  These are larger areas that surround a defined population core of some minimum population threshold.

The latest listing includes not only redefined metropolitan statistical areas but also a group of smaller core-based areas called "micropolitan statistical areas." An urbanized area of at least 50,000 persons is necessary for a metropolitan statistical area, while an urban cluster of 10,000 or more persons is necessary for a micropolitan statistical area.  Adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration with the core (as measured by commuting ties) are also included.

Missouri has a new metropolitan statistical area, in addition to the six previously defined areas.  Jefferson City joins St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Joplin, Columbia, and St. Joseph as the state's metropolitan areas.  In addition, one Missouri county (McDonald) has become part of a metropolitan statistical area the principal cities of which are in Arkansas: the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, AR-MO metropolitan statistical area.

Eighteen micropolitan statistical areas have been defined around Missouri population cores not meeting the threshold to be a metropolitan area but having an urban cluster of at least 10,000 population.  Most of these consist of only one county.  In addition, two Missouri counties are now parts of micropolitan areas with principal cities in other states: the Keokuk-Fort Madison, IA-MO area and the Quincy, IL-MO area.

Finally, adjacent CBSAs meeting employment interchange standards can now form a Combined Statistical Area.  There are three such areas in Missouri.

The St. Louis metropolitan area and the adjacent Farmington micropolitan area form  the St. Louis-St.Charles-Farmington, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.

The Kansas City metropolitan area, the Warrensburg micropolitan area, and the Atchison, Kansas micropolitan area form the Kansas City-Overland Park-Kansas City, MO-KS Combined Statistical Area.

The Cape Girardeau and Sikeston micropolitan areas form the Cape Girardeau-Sikeston-Jackson, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.

Based on 2002 population estimates, 71 percent of Missouri residents lived in metropolitan areas, 13.1 percent in micropolitan areas, and 13.9 percent outside core-based statistical areas.
