In 2007, there were 9,752 Asian-owned businesses in Missouri, accounting for 1.95 percent of all firms statewide. (There were a total of 501,064 businesses in the Show-Me State in 2007.) Between 2002 and 2007, there was a 52.9 percent increase in Asian-owned firms and a 83.5 percent increase in gross sales and receipts by these firms. More than 65 percent of the businesses were located in St. Louis or Kansas City Metro areas.
Receipts
In terms of total sales and receipts, the largest grossing areas are St. Louis County, Jackson County and St. Louis City. Although Jackson County has fewer Asian-owned businesses than St. Louis City, sales and receipts of Asian-owned businesses in Jackson County are significantly above that of St. Louis City. This indicates that the area's fewer firms generate a larger economic impact.
Counties
Asian-owned businesses are concentrated in the Kansas City area and St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with six of the seven counties located in those MSA's. The counties with the most Asian-owned businesses are St. Louis County (34.4 percent), St. Louis City (12.4 percent), and Jackson County (10.8 percent).

Percentage of Counties Firms
The counties with the highest percentageof the county's firms being Asian-owned were led by St. Louis City with 5.14 percent followed by St. Louis County (3.64 percent), Platte (3.17 percent), Boone County (2.45 percent) and Clay County (2.34 percent).
Industry
Most Asian-owned businesses in Missouri are concentrated in other services (28.3 percent) followed by accommodation and food services (17.0 percent). Other significant sectors include retail trade (10.1 percent), health care and social assistance (10.0 percent) and professional, scientific and technical services (9.5 percent). In terms of total sales and receipts, however, the largest grossing industry was wholesale trade, grossing over $1.2 billion in sales and receipts but only accounting for only 1.8 percent of the Asian-owned businesses in Missouri.

Ethnic
Census data further reveals that most owners of Asian
businesses in Missouri describe themselves as of Chinese,
Vietnamese, and Asian Indian descent*, in that order. Business owners who classified
themselves as being of Asian Indian descent had highest average
sales and receipts.
